Well, as most of you know, the ps3 has been hack, but what you might not have known is that earlier today it was release. This hack has left the console world on the edge of its seat, as the most secure gaming machine has been hacked in just 5 weeks by the iPhone hacker George Hotz.

Quote

In the interest of openness, I've decided to release the exploit.

George Hotz, released his exploit code, in hope that maybe others could make use for it, and contribute to the ever growing ps3 scene!
What He has achieved is much more important then you could begin to imagine. What he has done was use hardware to find a hole in the security and then software to get passed it and maintain read and write access to the system memory. Which gives him control of the system.

Quote

I can make the system do whatever I want.

The exploit gives the user full access to the entire system memory aswell as HV level access to the processor. HV(Hypervisor) is a low level code which IBM and Sony should be the only ones with access to it. The code is a main part of the systems security that it should be able to detect hacks such as the Tiff image exploits that where used to hack the PSP. The HV basically is so secure it will stop pretty much anything.
Well George Hotz has managed to make his exploit more than perfect, so that when its run it will basically be the highest priority process running, over the HV, which shows exactly why this exploit code is more than important.

Since the exploit code runs from the lowest level, there is not much sony can do, unless they burst into every how and rewrite the hardware... lol, I'd personally like to see that happen =P

He asks that anybody using his exploit code puts their findings on http://wiki.ps2dev.org/
The link to the exploit code is Here
George Hotz will put information on how the exploit code works Here

Though, Sony still have a fighting chance. since Sony and IBM have protocols set up for worse-case scenarios such as this one. there where extra layers added to the system as extra security. There are 8 SPU's, 6 for the game developers and 2 which contain the description keys, The HV has not access to this. furthermore another level of security is the root-key, which is implemented to the cell itself. If access to the root-key was gained, then there would be nothing left to hack into.

So I'm supposed to take apart my PS3 to do this?
Thanks but no thanks. :/
I'll move this to front page anyways.

Thanks, well, this exploit is more aimed at homebrew developers and anyone that has a spare ps3 to hack. (which now includes me!)

as far as I read from the main article, he only opened his ps3 to get into the system and find the exploit. I'm pretty sure you just need to run the exploit. oh, btw its only been tested with 2.4.2... but probably will work for all the versions

Well, I've opened the rar and it looks as though you have to pulse something on a circuit board. I'm not particularly sure though, it wasn't overly clear.

Good post FH. I'm kinda glad I don't have a PS3 now, as there is no way I would take it apart and mess about with it, so I would hate to be stuck with it knowing what it could do.

Man, I had a hard time explaining. Basically, there's no way in hell I could/would do this hack, right? So if I had a PS3, I would be pissed that it could be hackable and do all this cool shit, but mine couldn't. Get me?

I guess, but you didn't hack your 360 either, so I don't really see why this is an issue.

Why would you want to do it anyway?

It's aimed at developers for now, casual gamers should stay the fuck out. (yes that includes me)
I am immune to The Game. However, you on the other hand, are not.

And me. Maybe, after my console's warranty expires, and after I flip a coin and get heads, then ask an Ouija Board about it, I'll consider it.
